RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
Inventory & Monitoring
I worked with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to inventory and monitor populations of an array of amphibian and reptiles, including special-status species (e.g., eastern box turtles, green salamanders, eastern hellbenders, crawfish frogs). Through Colorado Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (COPARC) I am participating in yearly surveys of herpetofauna for Colorado Dept of Transportation and the US Forest Service. I am currently investigating the status of northern leopard frogs near Boulder, Colorado and volunteer with Colorado Parks & Wildlife as an amphibian and reptile monitor. |
Wildlife Conflict Mitigation
In partnership with Adaptation Environmental Services and Jefferson County Open Space, I used radio telemetry to study the spatial ecology, phenology, and habitat associations of prairie rattlesnakes (Crotalus viridis) in a high-use wildland park in the Front Range. We also studied human-rattlesnake interactions and visitor attitudes and beliefs about sharing the trail with rattlesnakes. A weekly blog, the Rattler-Tattler, presented additional information about this study. We received considerable news coverage for this project, summarized here. |
Wildlife Management
Following a survey of amphibian, reptile, and bird species at a Colorado state park I provided management, monitoring, and education recommendations for special-status species of birds (e.g., bald eagle, white-faced ibis, black-necked stilt) and herptiles (e.g., northern leopard frogs, red-sided gartersnakes) occurring on the parcel. |
Wildlife Translocation
Following their collection from an interstate corridor and translocation to suitable habitat, I used radio telemetry to study the movements of eastern box turtles (Terrapene carolina carolina) for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (INDNR). Data collected from the newly introduced turtles was compared to the movements of turtles already residing on the parcel in order to assess the success of the translocation. Read more about this story in the INDNR 2015 Wildlife Science Report. |
Head-starting
In Rod Williams Lab at Purdue University I assisted with husbandry of various life stages of wild-collected eastern hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis alleganiensis), a State-endangered species in Indiana considered Near-threatened globally by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Head-started hellbenders are more likely to survive after translocation than their directly-released counterparts. For more information about this project and related hellbender conservation efforts visit Help the Hellbender. |
