Video Productions
Jefferson County Open Space produced a video, "Rattlesnakes Happen," summarizing frequently asked questions from our park visitors about prairie rattlesnake identification, biology, and safety, and providing our detailed responses. DoD PARC sponsored an educational video "Snakes and Safety on Continental US DoD Installations," now available on Youtube. I served as lead writer and narrator and contributed many of my own photos to this production. |
Citizen-Science
I have participated in the Indiana chapter of the North American Amphibian Monitoring Program (NAAMP). I also assist as a volunteer in a partnership between Colorado Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (COPARC), the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), and the United States Forest Service (USFS) to inventory the herpetofauna of southeastern Colorado and help volunteers gain herpetology experience and reinforce resource stewardship. I currently manage Jefferson County Open Space's chapter of the FrogWatch USA program. |
Interpretation Presentations
I have worked with Wesselman Nature Society and Jefferson County Open Space to lead nature walks, informal campfire discussions, and oral presentations about natural history, stewardship, safety, and conservation relating to local flora and fauna. Topics I have discussed include rattlesnake behavior, large carnivore safety, fire ecology, succession, and amphibian declines. |
Educational Programming
I design educational programs that blend science communication and the promotion of biodiversity conservation. At Wesselman Nature Society I led small teams of volunteers in teaching school group programs centered on local wildlife, covering an array of topics such as zoology, ecology, and sustainability. I also taught the Indiana Department of Natural Resources' (INDNR) Go FishIN sport fishing educational program. In addition to the above I worked with Jefferson County Open Space to design early childhood education programming about the biology of local lizards and salamanders. |
Outreach Events
I designed educational activities and displays for the Be Wild, Jeffco zone of the Jeffco Fair & Festival showcasing the biodiversity within Jefferson County Open Space (JCOS) parks and the interpretive programming available through the agency. I have also created reptile and amphibian ecology and behavior education activities for Scout Days at Dinosaur Ridge and the First Fridays event at Haynie's Corner Art District in Evansville, Indiana. Other events where I have provided conservation outreach and education include: Jeffco Wildflower Festival, Jeffco Halloween Festival, Wesselman Nature Society's Bug Fest, and Help the Hellbender's Hellbender Hustle. |
Educational Materials
I helped to design new exhibits at the Wesselman Woods Nature Center. Other interpretive materials I have produced include: graphical representations of frog and salamander diversity in Indiana, informational signage for live salamander exhibits, interactive crafts demonstrating the concept of metamorphosis, and a card game demonstrating how frogs find mates. I also designed an in-house reference guide for Jeffco Open Space staff covering how to identify the amphibians and reptiles of Colorado's Front Range. |
Online Outreach
I authored several reptile species accounts for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources website and a story about prairie rattlesnake research in the 'Rattlesnake Safety & Awareness' issue of Jefferson County Open Space's Panorama e-newsletter. As part of the educational outreach efforts associated with an ongoing prairie rattlesnake tracking project in an urban park, I contribute to a weekly blog, the 'Rattler Tattler,' detailing different facets of the research. I also use the social media platforms Instagram and Twitter to share information about wildlife and discuss wildlife-related news; I am now followed by over 3,800 people across these platforms. In addition to participating wildlfie Q&A sessions via Facebook Live, I have also written several posts for the Jefferson County Open Space Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts about wildlife conservation and land stewardship. |
Media
I have appeared in interviews and videos from various news outlets, providing me with another avenue for communicating information to the public about natural history and ecology as well as boosting the impact of my work in research and conservation. For a summary of the media coverage of my work in prairie rattlesnake urban ecology, visit the IN THE NEWS page. |
